Drop off location

NYC, Fall 2024

Watercolor on paper, 11x14 inches

On the other side of the self checkout section you’d find the Amazon drop off location, it’s all the way pass the small cafeteria like area, and often the line would go through the seating area and curve back into the main section of the store mimicking the shape of a giant snake, as if we were in the real amazon.

Today at 8:55am this is where you’d find me, holding two identical plastic trays, meant to hold a homemade sashimi presentation. The lower part of the tray is not see through plastic, it resembles more of a cardboard material actually, which is the reason I’m returning them. At first I thought that it was a mistake, so I ordered the second tray and realized that even if it is a mistake, it’s also intentional.

I am the second person in the line, they open at 9:00 am although the actual store opens an hour earlier at 8:00 am. A tall man with a baseball cap is sitting at one of the tables with a to-go beverage. He doesn’t make eye contact or seems to be aware of his surroundings, in fact his eyes never leave the sight of his phone. Even when a few individuals take a little too much mental space with their packages, the man still stays true to himself. I look at him with a little sense of sadness, wondering if he is one of those people who can’t read facial expressions so he ends up being on his phone instead. But most likely it’s just another day on social media for him and the rest of us.
